Being Prepared for the Future

Deep understanding of the properties and behavior of substances and compounds in use is the foundation of a successful drug development. This idea is not new, but still highly relevant. This knowledge enables us to decide what to do with the material and what to refrain from doing ‒ regardless of whether it is a small or a large molecule and regardless of the processing technique. That is why the characterization of drug substances and excipients, the investigation of drug-excipient interactions, the optimization of formulations, etc., are also part of the “Quality by Design” principle. Thermal Analysis as well as rheometry can make an important contribution to this.

On the way from the lab to production, further key parameters are of interest, for example, with regard to thermal safety. TMR (time to maximum rate) or TD24 (time to maximum rate for the induction period of 24 hours) are crucial in the safe design of large-scale processes. Adiabatic calorimetry, especially Accelerating Rate Calorimetry, can provide important information here.
