From Mucus to Modulus: An Introduction to Rheology with a Bio-Rheologist

Dr. Shona Marsh, NETZSCH-Gerätebau GmbH 

Join our laboratory liaisons with a bio-rheologist as we discuss all things rheology, from mucus to modulus, including discussions about the challenges of collagen, the structures of scaffolds and bubbles in blood!

Dr. Marsh is the Applications and Product Marketing Manager for Rheology at NETZSCH, based in the UK. She has had more than 10 years experience working with rheometry, thermal analysis and other analytical techniques having completed a PhD in Polymer Science investigating the miscibility of biodegradable polymers. Previously, as a technical specialist in rheometry, Shona has been providing international support to customers with her extensive amount of experience in a variety of industries, including the measurements of foods, pharmaceuticals, polymers, inks, paints, coatings, emulsions, asphalt and bitumen. In 2018 Shona was invited to become a council member of the British Society of Rheology.

Dr. Alex Holder read Chemical Engineering at Swansea University and joined the Welsh Centre of Printing and Coating after completing his PhD in Nanotechnology. As a PhD student, he worked on validating advanced rheometric techniques such as Optimal Fourier Rheometry (OFR) and controlled stress parallel superposition (CSPS) while working closely with industrial partners on how these techniques might provide better data for their flow modelling. During his time at the WCPC, Alex was involved in the development of printed pressure sensors as well as developing advanced rheometric techniques to investigate fluid properties specifically of interest to printing. After a collaborative research project with the Complex Fluids Research Group at Swansea University Alex has returned to the WCPC and seeks to utilise advanced rheometric techniques to further understanding in the field of printed electronics as well as other complex biological and industrial rheological systems.
